Here's the main interface for MSI Afterburner, using the v3 skin. Case in point: Even though all the RTX 4090 cards we've seen so far appear to use Micron 21Gbps GDDR6X memory ("D8BZC" labeled chips), we've seen maximum stable memory overclocks range from 22.6Gbps to as high as 25Gbps. Please note that overclocking very much depends on the "silicon lottery." Just because one person with a "HappyGPUs RTX 4090 X-Factor-Wow" model card (that's a made up name, if you couldn't tell) managed a 20% core overclock and a 25% memory overclock doesn't mean that every RTX 4090 card will hit those same clocks, or even that the same model will reach similar clocks. It's also possible to overclock AMD and Nvidia GPUs using the built-in utility in AMD's drivers or Nvidia's GeForce Experience, which we'll cover below, but we'll start with the universal approach to overclocking your GPU. The same basic process can be used with other utilities, including EVGA Precision X1, Asus GPU Tweak, and other graphics card vendor utilities. There are a variety of utilities, but we're going to focus on MSI Afterburner, which is one of the most popular and commonly used GPU overclocking tools. Once you have your baseline stock performance data, it's time to start overclocking. ![]() Check our guide on how to test graphics card performance, and you'll also want to check your graphics card temperatures and clock speeds. You want to be able to see how much faster your PC runs after tuning, after all - if performance doesn't improve, you'll want to know. But if you have one of the best graphics cards and you're looking to eke out a bit more performance, we'll discuss how we go about overclocking and determining "safe" settings.īefore overclocking, it's useful to get a baseline measurement of how your graphics card performs. Of course, as with any overclocking, care should be taken to avoid running your GPU at unsafe settings. After testing we found that we really didn’t even need to set it that high, 55-60% would be more than sufficient.Overclocking your graphics card can improve its performance by 5% to as much as 15% (or more), depending on the particular card model. BTW, we did all this with a forced fan speed of only 70%. It is 14GHz by default, but we were able to take it to 15.9GHz, which is higher than what we achieved on the Founders Edition at 15.8GHz. We were also impressed by how high we could overclock the memory. We’ll show the exact frequency below in a graph. This overclock is higher than what we found was achieved on the Founders Edition video card. Adding voltage remember, just takes away from the overall board power and you hit the TDP wall much quicker. We were surprised how much headroom the GPU had still even without voltage applied. A game here or there might be unstable at 1980MHz without voltage, but dropping to 1970MHz and raising voltage fixes that. ![]() Another option was to lower it to 1970MHz and raise the voltage to the max if instability ever occurred. However, it was on the edge of being stable but did provide consistent frequency. Without overvolting, we managed 1980MHz GPU Boost. We found that overall raising the GPU Voltage did not help us to overclock more. In addition, we have the memory set to +1898 or 15,900MHz which is 15.9GHz. We have the power target at 125 and we found that we could set the GPU Boost Clock up to +75 or 1980MHz. You will see ASUS GPU Tweak II above with the highest overclock we found on the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING video card.
